Causation, Correlation, Science, and Astrology

by L. Ron Gardner

Is astrology a science? Yes and no. The astronomy of astrology is scientific, for it objectively identifies the positions of the sun, moon, planets, and stars in relation to a specific time and location on the earth. But how an astrologer interprets these positions (usually in relation to person) is subjective and an art.

It’s always fun for me to have conversations with naysayers of astrology, because these people are always ignorant on the subject. Typically, they insist that the stars can’t influence human behavior. When I reply that I practice tropical, rather than sidereal, astrology, which is about the correlation of the positions of the sun, moon and solar system planets, and not the stars, in relation to time and location on earth, they sometimes become silent. And when I tell them that the planets may not influence human behavior but merely provide (as a watch does for time) a correlative “map” for reading it, they seldom know what to say.

When Isaac Newton was asked by a fellow scientist how he could believe in astrology, he replied, “I have studied it, you haven’t.” As a college student, I initially laughed at the pop astrology crap my younger sister was reading. But when I saw that some of it rang true, I began to study the subject, and some years later I became, for a time, a professional astrologer.

Before radioactive substances were discovered, science would laugh at someone’s claim that a rock could poison them with its energy. Perhaps someday science will discover and identify particular “astral” energies emitted by or through the mediums of the sun, moon, and planets. Or perhaps science will explain the correlation of the position of these “bodies” in space with behavior on earth. So, while the astronomy of astrology is science, the effects of the positions of these “bodies” on earthlings could be termed “pre-science.” But this does not negate the insightful and useful information that a skilled astrologer can, artfully, glean from astrology charts.

Everything effects everybody, mostly indirectly, even if at minuscule level. What’s so special about sun/moon/planets. Destiny is one’s hands lots more than people realize. Everyone has the power to create their own world (s).
Nothing can effect any one, too. We all get what we seek, and you can randomly decide what you are going to seek…or not.

Red, your reading comprehension is poor. I made it clear that the positions of the planets might not be influencing us, but simply reflect what is.

I have no interest in wasting my time trying to convince people of the validity and usefulness of tropical astrology. Fools will diss it, and miss out on the plethora of information and occult knowledge it offers. Without astrology, I couldn’t have “cracked the code” of the theosophical qabalah.

i misread, thanks for clarification. I see what you mean, though i would prefer to look inside one’s mind for the reflection of what is. It is an interesting perspective on astrology, nevertheless.

Mr. Gardner,

Is that actually the case other than in dreams of sleep probably. Even in sleep do we actually create
our dreams all by ourselves? Thats seems impossible.

People cannot literally their own objective world (s), but to the extent that they are able, they can create their own world views, which, could be construed as their own subjective “world.”
